<1984> Characters

Winston, Julia, and O'Brien are the three main characters in this novel, 1984. Winston is a thirty-nine-year-old minor member of the ruling Party of a dystopian world. Although he works for the government, he hides his secrete abhorrence against the oppressive, totalitarian government. Winston even had the dream of overthrowing the government. O'Brien is the mysterious member of the Inner Party. He tortures and brainwashes people who are against the government. Winston also got brainwashed near the end of the story by his misunderstanding, thinking that O'Brien is the member Brotherhood. Julia is in-between Winston and O'Brien. Although Julia doesn't like the oppressive government, she doesn't take any strong actions against it. If I were living in this dystopian world, I would be like Winston. I don't think I would be able to live under the oppressive government without taking any actions. Although I might be brainwashed and tortured, I think I would fight for freedom and overthrow the government. Winston, Julia, and O'Brien are the important characters; as George Owell did in most of his books, each of the characters in 1984 resembles different people in our society.

I agree with you about what you said about the main characters. Julia, she REALLY doesn't do anything about the government she does not like, and O'Brien, he's in charge of torturing and brainwashing people, which is very terrible. And he does it without any emotion~!And our protagonist Winston...he does TRY to go against the government, and even trying and fighting for what he believed is very admirable indeed. But,,,I think it was too irrational maybe? Because, let's face it. Individual vs Society.
We read it in the novels all the time, and even in reality, it's always the individual that get's crushed, isn't it?I think the phrase 'think before you act' is just the right phrase that Winston Smith needed to hear. I don't think he was being very realistic. He should've been more careful with his plans if he really wanted to overthrow the government which was in absolute power with spies everywhere!Actions he commited were sort of saying 'Hey, I'm against the government'outloud.
And I know I said something like this before in my other comment,,but I really think it would be hard for an individual to fight for freedom under the dystopian world like 1984. Like I said, most people wouldn't know the concept such as freedom, love towards people other than Big Brother, and privacy, etc. And an individual have limited influence over people. Even looking back at our history, it was GROUP of PEOPLE that made the difference, NOT an INDIVIDUAL.

Anwyay, it was really interesting to read your posts.good work^^
